Nessus licenses are node-locked, meaning a single activation code is designed to be active on only one host machine at any given time. The "license already in use" error occurs when the Tenable licensing server believes your activation code is still attached to a previous installation or a different machine. Common scenarios include:

This error happens because Tenable links your Nessus activation code to a unique challenge code generated by your specific machine. If you previously registered Nessus using that same activation code—even on the exact same hardware—Tenable's license server flags it as an active installation.
