Getting MIDI data into the (.dmf) format used to be a tedious manual process, but recent tools have made it much faster.
DefleMask is a popular cross-platform tracker used to produce music for legacy hardware, including the SEGA Genesis (Mega Drive), Nintendo Game Boy, NES, Commodore 64, and arcade systems like the Capcom Play System (CPS-1). It outputs native files, which contain the exact note data, volume commands, and instrument macro properties required to drive these classic sound chips.
MIDI files have been widely used in music production for decades, allowing composers and producers to create and edit musical compositions with ease. However, MIDI files have limitations. They do not contain actual audio data, but rather instructions on how to play the music. This means that MIDI files rely on external devices or software to produce sound.
Before looking at the 'how', it's important to understand the 'what'. A is the primary project file format for DefleMask. It contains all the note data, instrument settings, patterns, and system configurations for a song. On the other hand, a .mid (MIDI) file is a universal standard, storing note-on/off events, velocity, pitch, and control changes, but rarely specific sound generation data.
Snap all note beginnings and note ends cleanly to the grid. 16th-note quantization is highly recommended.
If your tracks contain dense chords, turn on and specify the maximum allowed width (typically 3 notes max to avoid stealing channels from other elements).
: For optimal tracker alignment, it is recommended to use software like REAPER to set MIDI ticks to 24 pulses per quarter note before exporting for conversion.
To get the best results from your MIDI to DMF conversion, regardless of the method you choose, follow these golden rules:
Unlike standard audio files, a DMF file contains raw sequence instructions: note values, instruments, volumes, and custom hardware effects. Modern applications like Furnace Tracker also fully support importing .dmf files, cementing the format as a universal bridge for tracker-based musicians. Modern Solutions for MIDI to DMF Conversion
For converting existing game music (VGZ/VGM), some users still use a chain: VGM → MIDI → DMF using older utilities, though this often requires heavy cleaning of the resulting tracker patterns.
