Unable to bear the humiliation and mistreatment, Seita decides they would be better off on their own. He moves himself and Setsuko into an abandoned bomb shelter—a dank, firefly-filled cave by a river. Believing they are now free, Seita tries to provide for them by foraging and eventually stealing from farmers during the air raids. Despite his efforts, malnutrition and sickness quickly set in. Seita, blinded by his pride and denial, fails to grasp the severity of their situation until it is too late. Setsuko begins to show the fatal symptoms of starvation, and in her final days, she begins to hallucinate, playing with marbles and demanding food that doesn't exist. The story ends where it began: with Seita dying alone in the train station, having failed to save his sister.
