As the brothers navigate their complicated past and present, they must confront their deep-seated emotions and learn to forgive each other. The film also stars Natalie Portman as Grace, Joe's wife, who becomes a source of support and comfort for both brothers.

The film is obsessed with the corrosive nature of guilt. Sam returns home carrying an immense, crushing weight of guilt over the actions he was forced to take to survive. This guilt manifests as paranoia, rage, and a deep distrust of his wife and brother, whom he irrationally suspects of betraying him. Tommy, meanwhile, carries his own guilt from his criminal past, as well as a new, profound guilt for falling in love with his dead brother's wife. Grace is torn by her sense of duty to her presumed-dead husband and her growing feelings for the man who has been present for her in her darkest hour. Sheridan described the film as a "thing about family, the nature of duty, war, guilt, and calamity of the human heart," perfectly capturing the film's emotional scope.
